A Song for Bangkok – The Full Name of Bangkok
Did you know that the name Bangkok is not actually the name Thai’s use to refer to their capital city? The actual name is included in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the longest place name in the world. Because the name is so long, people don’t actually use the full name in day to day conversations. Could you imagine how long conversations would last if it took someone an extra thirty seconds or so every time they needed to say Bangkok?
The name is so long that in order to learn it, most students will sing it as a song. The rhythm makes the learning a bit easier, or so they say. For those of you wondering, here is the full name in it’s entirety, both Thai script and English script included.

This is translated roughly as:
The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukam.
Is that long enough for you? I did warn you that it was quite long. Want to impress your Thai friends? Then why not learn the entire name for yourself?
