5 Most Popular Destinations in Thailand
Thailand is the Land of Smiles and whether you are into the culture, the food, the beaches, the nightlife or something else entirely, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Just remember that most visited doesn’t necessarily mean the best, only where the people are actually going. However, if people are actually traveling to these places, they must have something going for them. Whether you love them or hate them, these are the top 5 most visited destinations in all of Thailand.
5 Chiang Mai
The province of Chiang Mai is in the north of Thailand and offers a very unique holiday experience compared to the rest of our list. Although it is one of the largest cities in the country, Chiang Mai has a much slower pace of life than the booming capital of Bangkok. It is a wonderful destination choice for those looking to experience Thai culture and the countries natural beauty. Whether you want to go hiking, rafting, elephant trekking, or visit some of the most beautiful temples in all of Thailand, Chiang Mai has it all. It is also easily accessible from the capital with an international airport located right at its edge.
4 Koh Samui
Koh Samui is Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket and is one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Being a tropical island paradise, the major draw for visitors heading to Koh Samui is for the beaches. Unfortunately, the island has not held up well under the constant pressure of development and the two major beaches of Chaweng and Lamai have suffered as a result. Regardless, the island is still one of the most visited tourist destinations in all of Thailand.
Pattaya is only a few hours outside of Bangkok and is a favorite weekend beach getaway for many living in the big city. However, Pattaya is a tourist destination in itself. Famous or infamous, however you want to look at it, Pattaya is known as the sex tourist capital of Thailand. It is famous for its beer bars and go-go bars, with the notorious Walking Street at it’s center. However, despite Pattaya’s seedy reputation as a sex tourist destination, in recent years, the government has made efforts to turn Pattaya into a more family friendly destination.
Phuket is the largest island in all of Thailand and is one of the largest tourist draws in the entire country. Although local residents have mixed feelings about the resort island, that can’t keep the visitors away. There is a large number of wonderful beaches and islands located a short boat ride away. There is also a booming nightlife that is centered in the city of Patong on the islands West shore. The island of Phuket is easily accessible from its international airport to the north and is an ideal staging ground to visit the local islands including Phi Phi Island and the Similan Islands.
Number one on the list shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Bangkok, the Big Mango, is the economic center of Thailand and also the largest city in the entire country. Whether you are just passing through or staying for a longer visit, Bangkok is teeming with things to see and do. The capital city is home to dozens of temples, palaces, museums and attractions. It also has the most active nightlife in the country and enough street food to make any foodie’s heart flutter with excitement. Bangkok truly does offer something for everyone and is well deserving of the number one spot on our list.
